Formal Project Description:
ODOT proposes to undertake maintenance activities on the MIA-571-16.55 bridge over the Great Miami River in Bethel and Monroe Townships, Miami County. The project is necessary to address deteriorated conditions and extend the lifespan of the structure. Work to be undertaken includes:
• Place overlay using milling
• Reset bearing alignment
• Repair deck
• Replace expansion joints
• Paint structural steel, beams, cross frames, end frames and bearings
• Retrofit bridge railingsAll work will occur within the existing public right-of-way.
The project is expected to begin in Spring 2028 and require up to six months for construction. The bridge is expected to be closed to traffic for up to 6 weeks; a signed detour will be provided. No utility relocations are anticipated.
The project is located in an undeveloped area of nature preserves and agricultural lands. Within the project area, there are no National Historic Landmarks, sites listed on or known eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or sites for which Ohio Historic/Archaeological Inventory forms have been completed. The project bridge is nonhistoric.
The Great Miami River is a designated Water Trail. Containment measures will be installed for overhead work and on-river access will be maintained. If necessary to restrict access between bridge spans, personnel or signage will be utilized to direct paddlers to the correct bridge span(s). A paddle access and parking are present in the southeast quadrant; the Contractor will be required to maintain access to this area during construction.
At the bridge location, the Great Miami River is an exceptional warmwater habitat with a drainage area of over 1000 square miles at the project location. Live mussels are present within the project area; the project has been designed to avoid instream work and mussels will not be impacted. A wetland is present immediately downstream of the bridge; it will not be disturbed by construction. The project will not require the removal of suitable wooded habitat for protected bat species.
The Great Miami River is a Section 10 waterway within the project limits. As noted above, on-river access will be maintained. Appropriate notification to the US Coast Guard will be completed prior to plan file.
The project is located within the designated special flood hazard area and floodway associated with the Great Miami River. The project is a maintenance activity that will not impact the base flood elevation. The project is in an area subject to Miami Conservancy District review.
The project is funded with federal and state System Preservation Funds. The estimated construction cost is approximately $2-million. Environmental clearance is scheduled for 01/01/2027. The project is expected to award in October 2027.
